False ceilings hide wiring, improve lighting and cool a room down visually. But the material you choose decides whether it still looks good after five Assam monsoons.
PVC ceiling panels
PVC is fully waterproof, termite-proof and the fastest to install — a room can be finished in a day. It costs ₹85 – ₹180 per sq ft installed. Best for bathrooms, kitchens, balconies, shops and rental properties. The downside is a slightly synthetic look on very large ceilings.
Wooden and veneer ceilings
Wooden rafters and veneer panels give warmth no other material matches, and suit living and dining rooms. Expect ₹450 – ₹900 per sq ft. In Upper Assam they must be properly seasoned and polished, and kept away from wet zones.
Gypsum and POP
Gypsum board gives the cleanest flat finish for cove lighting at ₹90 – ₹150 per sq ft. POP is cheaper but messier and cracks more over time. Neither should be used in a room that gets damp.
